Fibroids

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus (womb). Also called uterine leiomyomas, they vary in size and number and can affect menstruation, fertility, and overall reproductive health. Many women with fibroids experience no symptoms, while others may have significant discomfort.

Common Symptoms :

  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Frequent urination or difficulty emptying the bladder
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Lower back pain
  • Enlarged abdomen or feeling of fullness
  • Difficulty in conceiving (in some cases)

Causes & Risk Factors :

While the exact cause of fibroids is unclear, several factors may contribute:

  • Hormonal imbalances (especially estrogen and progesterone)
  • Genetic factors (family history of fibroids)
  • Obesity or unhealthy lifestyle
  • Early onset of menstruation
  • Vitamin D deficiency
  • Diet high in red meat and low in green vegetables

Treatment Options :

Treatment depends on size, location, symptoms, and fertility goals:

  • Watchful waiting if fibroids are small and symptom-free
  • Medications to control bleeding or shrink fibroids
  • Hormonal therapy or birth control pills
  • Non-invasive procedures like MRI-guided focused ultrasound
  • Minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopic or hysteroscopic removal)
  • Myomectomy (fibroid removal preserving uterus)
  • Hysterectomy (uterus removal, for severe or recurrent cases)

Prevention & Lifestyle Tips :

  • Maintain a healthy body weight
  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits and green vegetables
  • Get regular exercise
  • Avoid processed meats and excess alcohol
  • Regular gynaecological check-ups
  • Manage stress and hormonal health
